Life in Scaly Mountain,NC is a little slower now that winter is on our door step. Word around town is that it is going to be another cold year here in Scaly and Highlands. So for those of you who stick around and really enjoy the cold and snow, we are the lucky ones I say. I just wish it would snow more often and that it would stick around a little longer. I always tell my wife to bring it on!!
With the sun setting so early, I like too get a fire started in the wood stove for the evening. There is nothing like the nice warm feeling you get from having a fire during the winter. Deb and will kick back with a glass of wine and just stare into the fire and watch the flames dance. I make sure we have plenty of firewood laid in for the winter, because the last thing I want to do is split firewood when its 10 degrees outside.
Over the next few months, this is the time when we get together with friends that we barely saw over the Summer. Getting caught up with what they did or didn't do over the past several months. We get together usually at our house where Deb will cook an awesome dinner, I am bias when I say that my wife is an excellent cook and she puts out one hella of a meal.
I really enjoy living in Scaly (why you ask), because the only way to describe it is when you leave and go away for a vacation or to visit family, I can't wait to get back . This is home and this is the place that makes me feel happy inside. Until then, have a safe and warm winter.

How much would you pay for this view?
As some of you know, I am a Real Estate agent with Keller Williams Realty in the Highlands, Cashiers,Sapphire, and Scaly Mountain area. I am a member of our local board the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. I recently had a conversation with a neighbor who is renting a home next to me in Scaly Mountain. His big question to me was "why are homes so expensive here and why does it cost so much to live here?" I did my very best to answer his question. I told him that I had lived in two other resort towns, where the cost of living was very high and because they are considered resort destinations. With our higher elevations, you get cooler temperatures, long range views, waterfalls, rivers, creeks and streams.I could only quote to him that a fellow Realtor once told a group of fellow agents from a different part of our state, that we don't sell by the square foot we sell views. Our views come with a price, a very big price. Now, I grant you not all properties come with an exceptional, layered mountain view. Then there is the old cliche' Location,Location, Location. If you strive to have an Aspen,CO address it is going to cost you major big bucks to buy a home there. The same can be said for Key West, FL or any other big name resort town. Scaly Mountain,NC may not get the same attention that Highlands, NC does, but what it does offer is the same cool temperatures, long range views, and a little more my breathing room. We have our neighbors near by but not so close that I can see into there living room to see what they are watching on TV. As of this day, I have found 48 homes on the market in Scaly Mountain. They range in price starting at $125,000 to $1,795,000. Several of them need some TLC, others just need some painting and touch up work done, the rest you would just need to move in and unpack your toothbrush. In my opinion, you are not just buying a home in the mountains, you are buying a life style.Cool summer days, lovely views and so much more. Summer in Scaly Mountain, NC
Summer has finally arrived with our first days of 80 degree temperatures. My wife, Debbie Mackie and I have been busy with our real estate careers. Our past clients and new ones are happy to be here where the temperatures are much cooler. Showing homes in Highlands, NC and Scaly Mountain, NC this past week to future residents, makes one feel blessed to hang your hat, your hiking boots or fishing pole here in the mountains. I have mention before that Deb and I have a vegetable/flower garden in Scaly Mountain, with a killer view of the Southern Appalachians. For the past week we have been picking raspberries, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and arugula. We planted dahlias this past spring and they are starting to come in. If all goes well, we should have hundreds of blooms this year along with daisies, cosmos, sunflowers, bee balm, phlox and marigolds. With a little luck and more hard work we are looking at having tomatoes this year, we are keeping our fingers crossed.
For those of us who are lucky enough to call Scaly Mountain, NC home, we can't complain.

Garden in Scaly Mountain
I know you all must be tired of winter and are ready for Spring. Soon it will be a distant memory and we will forget that it was even that bad. A lot of us who live in Scaly Mountain have a garden for flowers and vegetables. Mine is no exception. With the warmer temps just around the corner, I get excited about planting for the new season. With any garden, their is work to be done before you reep the benefits of your hard work. The same can be said for your home and yard. Property owners who are looking to put their homes on the market this Spring need to think about getting their property ready to show well this Summer. Keeping your house and the surrounding landscape in excellent showing condition will pay off when it sells. When I show my garden off to friends and clients , everyone of them is impressed by the beauty of it . I will do my best to take pictures of the garden thru out the growing season and post them on my blogg.

Hi everyone, I'M BACK!!!!!!!! Did you miss me. I have been bad about not keeping up with my responsibilities, my lame excuse is that my wife and I went to Phoenix,AZ. We attended the Keller Williams Family Reunion, along with 13,000 fellow KW friends. It was a great experience to be surrounded by so many happy people, I am pretty sure there was a little bit of alcohol involved. For those of you who are real estate agents out there, you should consider joining our little family. Keller Williams ranked 2nd in the USA in training their agents, to become the BEST customer service agents in North America and eventually the whole planet. Keller Williams is the only privately held real estate company while several other company's are being sold on the stock market to the public. Our head honcho Gary Keller says and I quote"we are an education company disguised as a real estate company". I will leave it at that. I wish the snow had stuck around a little longer than it did,say until April 1st. Hey, a guy can dream can't he. For those of you who whine about how cold it has been this year, you have no idea of what cold really is until you lived in Minnesota or Wisconsin for a very long time. So I say go back to where you came from or go to South Florida and stay there!!!!!!!!!!! BYE BYE for now, see you next week.
